European online second-hand clothing market Vinted launches in Australia sparking price war

There’s fresh competition in Australia’s booming online second-hand clothing market, with European cyber-selling sensation Vinted launching down under and offering local shoppers bargains from across the globe.

The second-hand marketplace, which is already huge in the UK and France, is now giving Aussie bargain hunters access to its wares, including ladies’ fashion, high-end and vintage pieces, accessories, children’s toys and homewares.

“Thank God, finally,” said personal style specialist Donna Cameron. “Yeah, I’ve heard about Vinted for a long time through colleagues and friends overseas.”

The circular economy is delivering big savings for shoppers, with Vinted’s Marianne Gybels revealing the platform offers significant discounts.

“We found that on average you save 72 per cent if you shop second-hand instead of retail,” she said.

The fact that Vinted doesn’t charge seller fees has already prompted competitors eBay and Depop to drop theirs too, allowing Aussies clearing out their wardrobes to keep every cent they make.

Bargain hunter Jo Hayes said the increased competition would benefit consumers.

“The more competition, the better for consumers. It just means that people will be motivated to lower their prices,” she said.

Shoppers are also praising the platform’s image search feature, with photo uploads helping them to find items more quickly.

According to Vinted, the second-hand market in Australia is booming, with 90 per cent of Australians saying they’ve bought something pre-loved.

“People are a bit more aware of wanting to be sustainable now. They know that there’s so much clothing out there,” Cameron said.

Australia Post has partnered with Vinted to offer discounted shipping to help lure thrifty shoppers.
